あるいは出家後の号をとった黒田 如水（くろだ じょすい）として広く知られる。
豊臣秀吉の側近として仕え、調略や他大名との交渉などに活躍した。
竹中重治（半兵衛）と双璧をなす秀吉の参謀であり、
後世「両兵衛」「二兵衛」と並び称された。キリシタン大名でもあった。
子に黒田長政がいる。
出身
黒田氏は、『寛永諸家系図伝』などによれば、
賤ヶ岳山麓の近江国伊香郡黒田村の出身とされるが、定かではない。
孝高の祖父・黒田重隆の代に備前国邑久郡福岡村から播磨国に入り、置塩城の守護赤松晴政、
後に晴政重臣で御着城（現在の姫路市東部）を中心に播州平野に勢力を持っていた
戦国大名の小寺政職に仕えた。
政職は黒田氏を高く評価し、重隆を重臣として姫路城代に任じた。
重隆の子、黒田職隆には自らの養女を嫁がせ、小寺（こでら）の名字を名乗らせた。
